OpenAI cooked hard this week, here’s the rundown

I sat down with my coffee thinking it’d be a quiet AI news week. Wrong. OpenAI shipped so much in seven days my notes app started begging for mercy. Lucky for me, Matt Wolfe did the heavy lifting and packaged the whole firehose into one tight recap, so I’m passing his highlights along.

🧠 What’s new

The creator walks through a stack of fresh drops worth knowing about:

  • GPT-5.5 Instant became the new default in ChatGPT and Microsoft 365 Copilot. Tighter answers, less waffle, more personalization based on memory.
  • Three new OpenAI voice models hit the API: GPT Realtime 2 (GPT-5 class reasoning), Realtime Translate (70 input languages, 13 output, mid-sentence translation), and Realtime Whisper for live transcription.
  • ChatGPT Trusted Contact lets adults nominate a person to be notified if the system flags serious self-harm signals.
  • Codex now runs inside Chrome on Mac and Windows, plus a goofy /pet command that hatches little characters living in your terminal.
  • Anthropic rolled out Dreaming, where agents review past sessions on a schedule to spot patterns and self-improve.
  • Anthropic also signed a compute deal with SpaceX and committed $200B to Google Cloud, then raised Claude usage limits.
  • xAI shipped Grok 4.3, cheaper than rivals but still trailing the top-tier models.
  • Claude now lives inside Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook with shared context across apps.
  • Adobe Acrobat got a NotebookLM-style agent for chats, podcasts, and presentations from PDFs.
  • Spotify added personal AI-generated podcasts to your library.
  • Apple is reportedly testing AirPods with cameras for Siri vision context.
  • Nvidia and PTE are building in-wall home data centers with 16 Blackwell GPUs.

🎤 The twist

The part that made the original poster’s jaw drop was the OpenAI voice demo. You can literally tell the agent to shut up, hold a side conversation, then say “back to demo” and it picks right up. Matt tested it himself in the OpenAI playground and confirmed the pause-and-resume trick works. For anyone who records demos or runs live calls, that single feature changes the workflow.

🛠️ Quick how-to from the video

Want to try the new GPT-5.5 Instant right now?

  1. Open ChatGPT and click the model picker (it moved to the top, no longer in the left sidebar).
  2. Pick 5.5 Instant, Thinking, or Pro.
  3. Hit Configure to set it as your permanent default.
  4. Leave it on Instant with auto-switch to Thinking for the smoothest ride.

For the voice models, head to platform.openai.com/audio/realtime. Heads up: it bills against API credits.

💡 Pro tips Matt highlighted

  • Anthropic’s Dreaming hints at where everything is going. Agents that quietly watch your patterns and proactively suggest fixes, instead of waiting for prompts.
  • The Mira Murati testimony in the Musk vs Altman trial dropped real text messages between her and Sam during his firing weekend. Wild reading if you like AI palace intrigue.
  • HubSpot’s new AEO tool shows how your brand surfaces inside ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity. The mind behind the recap admitted his own newsletter was getting buried.

Matt packs way more nuance, screenshots, and the full Murati text thread into the recap. Worth a watch if you want the receipts behind every story above.
