India Just Launched Its First Private Rocket to Orbit

India reached a milestone this weekend that only a handful of nations and companies have ever managed. On Saturday, Skyroot Aerospace’s Vikram-1 rocket lifted off, reached orbit, and deployed its payloads on its very first flight, according to Ars Technica. That makes it the first privately developed rocket from India to reach orbit, and it did so on a debut launch that its own founder expected to fail.

That last part is what stands out. Pawan Chandana, Skyroot’s co-founder, told Ars Technica before the flight that “statistically, the first launch from a private company almost always fails. It’s very difficult to succeed with all new systems.” First orbital attempts from new companies usually end in the ocean or a fireball. Vikram-1 flew clean, deployed two small CubeSats, and carried several more payloads that stayed attached to the upper stage. As Chandana put it after the launch, the flight went “very well, exceeding all expectations.”

Why this matters

India already runs one of the world’s more capable government space programs. Skyroot’s flight is the first real proof that can change. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has told the Indian space industry to scale from about five launches a year to 50 before the decade is out. You don’t hit that number with a single government agency doing all the work. You hit it by opening the field to private companies that move fast and drive down cost per launch. Modi personally called Chandana after the launch and called it “a defining moment in India’s space journey,” adding that “the growing participation of our private sector is opening new frontiers and accelerating innovation.”

The bigger picture

Global demand for launch keeps climbing, and supply is tight. More companies reaching orbit means more options for satellite operators, lower prices, and less bottleneck around a few dominant providers. Chandana framed it as a win beyond national pride: “the world needs more access to space.”

He also leaned hard into the domestic angle, calling Vikram-1 “a 100 percent designed in India rocket, a 100 percent made in India rocket, built by 100 percent Indian people, for India and for the world.” Founded in 2018 by two former ISRO engineers, Skyroot just went from startup to orbital operator in seven years.
