Amazon files to beam cell service to phones

Amazon just made its clearest move yet toward the wireless business. The company has filed an application with the Federal Communications Commission to provide direct cell service, according to The Information. That’s the regulatory step you take when you want to connect ordinary phones straight to satellites, no cell tower required.

This lands squarely on top of Amazon’s Project Kuiper effort, the low-Earth-orbit constellation the company has been building to rival SpaceX’s Starlink. Until now, Kuiper’s pitch was home and business internet. A direct-to-device filing signals something bigger: Amazon wants a piece of the mobile market too.

What “direct cell service” actually means

Direct-to-device technology lets a normal smartphone talk to a satellite passing overhead. No special hardware, no dish, no satellite phone. The satellite acts like a cell tower in space, filling in coverage where terrestrial networks don’t reach.
