Google DeepMind just put sign language recognition directly into the phones people use every day. Working with Google’s Android team, DeepMind launched SL2T 1.0, a model that turns American Sign Language into text, and shipped it inside two apps millions already know: Gboard and Live Transcribe. According to Google DeepMind, it lands first on Pixel 11, with more devices coming, and it costs nothing extra.
This is significant because sign language has mostly been left out of the AI accessibility wave. Voice typing and live captions have been standard for years. ASL input hasn’t. SL2T (short for Sign Language to Text) starts closing that gap by treating signing as a first-class way to communicate with a device.
What Google DeepMind actually launched
- A working ASL-to-text model (SL2T 1.0). It reads American Sign Language and converts it into written text on the phone. Google DeepMind frames this as the product of decades of research finally reaching real users, not a lab demo.
- Real app integration, not a standalone tool. The model is built into Gboard (Google’s keyboard) and Live Transcribe (its accessibility captioning app). That matters. People don’t have to learn a new app or change their habits. The capability shows up where they already type and transcribe.
- On-device access on Pixel 11 first. SL2T is available now on Pixel 11, with Google DeepMind saying more devices are on the way. No subscription, no add-on fee.
- Built with the Deaf community, not just for it. This is the part that stands out to me. The project was conceived by Sam Sepah, a Deaf Googler, and shaped at every stage by Deaf partners: data collection, user studies, and impact review by Deaf experts.
- A governance body to guide rollout. Google DeepMind set up the AI Sign Language Advisory Committee (AISLAC), pulling in global Deaf organizations and subject-matter experts. The idea is that the communities most affected by the tech steer its priorities directly.
How the team is handling limits
Google DeepMind isn’t overselling this. Alongside the release, the team co-authored a joint impact report covering both what SL2T can do and where it falls short today. They say they plan to publish that kind of transparency report for every major sign language release.
The honest framing is worth noting. Bringing ASL input to phones is described as “only the beginning.” Right now the model handles one sign language, American Sign Language, and one direction, sign to text. Full parity with spoken and written languages is the stated goal, but it’s not here yet.
Why it matters
Accessibility features have a habit of staying stuck in specialist apps that most people never see. Putting ASL recognition inside Gboard and Live Transcribe changes the distribution story. These are mainstream tools. When accessibility ships inside the default keyboard, it stops being a separate product and starts being a standard expectation.
There’s also a signal here about how Google DeepMind wants to build sensitive AI. Participatory governance, a standing advisory committee, and public impact reports aren’t common launch features. For a technology that translates how an entire community communicates, getting that community to co-author the work is the difference between a tool people trust and one they don’t.
What comes next
Google DeepMind says the roadmap includes more sign languages, sign language generation (producing signs, not just reading them), and what the team calls “frontier AI capabilities.” Generation is the bigger leap. Reading ASL into text helps a signer be understood in text-based settings. Generating sign language would let information flow back the other way, which is where true parity starts to look real.
For now, the practical takeaway is simple. If you sign in ASL and you’re on a Pixel 11, you can type and transcribe with your hands inside apps you already use, at no extra cost.
