Trust in AI Is Cratering, So Are Its CEOs

The numbers just moved in the wrong direction for everyone building AI. According to Hacker News, a fresh batch of surveys shows public concern about AI climbing fast, and the people running the industry are trusted even less than the technology itself. That gap matters, and it’s widening.

Start with the headline figure. A Pew Research study found 52% of Americans are now more concerned than excited about AI in daily life, up sharply from 37% in 2021. Only 9% lean more excited than concerned. The rest sit on the fence.

What stands out here is the age flip. For the first time since Pew started asking, a majority of adults under 30 (55%) say they’re more worried than thrilled. The generation that’s supposed to be most comfortable with new tech is the one pumping the brakes.

The trust problem is personal

The wariness isn’t just aimed at the software. It’s aimed at the founders. A CNBC Generation Lab poll asked 1,088 people whether they trusted nine top AI leaders to act responsibly. A majority distrusted every single one.

  • Satya Nadella (Microsoft) did best, and still 65% said they don’t trust him.
  • Dario Amodei (Anthropic) and Sundar Pichai (Alphabet) both landed near 75% distrust.

When your best-performing executive is underwater by two to one, that’s not a PR hiccup. That’s a category-wide credibility problem. And notably, only 36% of respondents thought an independent expert body should set AI’s rules, so the public isn’t handing trust to anyone else by default either.

Europe is anxious but more open

The mood crosses the Atlantic, though with a different flavor. A 2025 EY study found 42% of European employees worry AI could threaten their jobs. A Verian Group survey for the European Commission put it starker: 66% believe AI will destroy more jobs than it creates.

Yet Europeans aren’t uniformly gloomy. Half think AI could help tackle big problems like disease and climate change. A 55% majority expect AI to shape daily life positively over the next 20 years, and 62% view AI at work favorably. The catch is oversight. A striking 84% say AI and robots need careful management, mostly to protect privacy and transparency.

Some of that caution traces back to a knowledge gap. More than 60% of Europeans say they don’t feel informed about the risks of AI in scientific research. People fear what they can’t see clearly.

Why this matters now

The backlash is turning physical in the US. Plans for new AI data centres are hitting public resistance, even when developers dangle job guarantees. The core issue is simple: people don’t see a personal payoff from the infrastructure going up around them.

AI used to be narrow and obviously useful. A search box. A chatbot. Now it’s in your TV, your email, your kid’s homework, your music feed. For a lot of people that expansion has felt negative, whether it’s students cheating or artists watching their work vacuumed into training sets without consent. Trust erodes when the visible costs land before the visible benefits.

What practitioners should do

This is significant because trust is now a growth constraint, not a soft metric. A few practical moves:

  • Lead with the personal benefit. If a user can’t name what they got, they’ll default to suspicion. Ship value people feel, not capability you can demo.
  • Close the knowledge gap. Sixty percent feeling uninformed is an opportunity. Plain-language explanations of risks and safeguards build more trust than another benchmark win.
  • Expect regulation, and get ahead of it. With 84% of Europeans wanting guardrails, oversight is coming. Companies that treat transparency as a feature will fare better than those fighting it.
  • Watch the consent line. The artist and student examples show where goodwill breaks. Data provenance and opt-outs are becoming table stakes.
