Reliance Jio Rents Out AI PCs From the Cloud

Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Jio just opened its cloud PC service to anyone in India with an internet connection, pitching it as a way to turn old, tired computers into AI-ready machines without buying new hardware. According to TechCrunch AI, Jio expanded JioPC on Wednesday beyond its own broadband subscribers, making it a stand-alone subscription available regardless of which telecom or broadband provider you use. The service, first launched in July 2025, streams a virtual PC from Jio’s cloud straight to the computer already sitting on your desk.

What Jio is actually selling

JioPC doesn’t upgrade your machine. It bypasses it. The processing and storage happen in Jio’s data centers, and the results stream back to your screen. That means an eight-year-old computer can tap into modern computing power it could never run locally.

The top plan offers up to eight virtual CPUs, 16GB of RAM, and 1TB of storage. Pricing is aggressive:

  • ₹1,000 (about $11) for two months, an entry trial
  • ₹4,000 (around $42) for 12 months with 8GB of RAM and 500GB of storage
  • ₹5,000 (about $53) for 12 months with 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage

For context, that yearly price is a fraction of what a new AI-capable laptop costs in India.

Why this matters now

Ambani is aiming at a real gap. India had more than 65 million PCs in use in 2025, roughly 34 million consumer and 31 million commercial machines, per IDC estimates cited by TechCrunch AI. That base is expected to reach nearly 69 million by the end of 2026. Plenty of hardware, much of it aging.

And people are holding onto their machines longer. IDC analyst Bharath Shenoy told TechCrunch that consumers and small businesses now replace PCs every five to six years, up from four to five years back in 2022. Enterprises stretched their cycles to about four years, up from three. Jio’s bet is simple: if it can keep adding computing capacity in the cloud, users never need to replace the box on their desk.

What stands out here is the business model shift. Prabhu Ram of CyberMedia Research told TechCrunch that JioPC could create a market where people pay for computing capability rather than repeatedly spending on hardware. “Jio is broadening its value proposition by opening JioPC to non-Jio users, while also challenging the traditional hardware upgrade cycle,” Ram said.

The catch

This isn’t a clean win, and the reporting is honest about that. A few real friction points:

  • Connectivity dependence. JioPC needs a stable internet connection. Any disruption hits the experience, and that risk is highest in the smaller cities and towns where cheap computing has the most room to grow.
  • Ownership habits. Indians have traditionally preferred owning hardware over renting it as a service, Shenoy noted. Jio has to convince buyers a recurring subscription beats a machine they control, including one that works offline.
  • Refurbished competition. At the low end, refurbished PCs let people own cheap hardware without staying tethered to the network.
  • The “AI PC” question. Jio hasn’t detailed the hardware behind the service, and its specs don’t mention dedicated AI accelerators for on-device generative AI. That’s the defining feature of the new AI PC category, so Jio is redefining the term more than matching it.

Ram doesn’t expect this to replace conventional PCs. Instead, he sees a parallel, price-sensitive tier for households, students, and others “for whom buying a new AI-capable PC was never really on the table to begin with.”

What to watch

The real test, as Ram framed it to TechCrunch, is whether Indians come to treat cloud computing as a “daily utility” rather than an “opportunistic workaround.” If Jio pulls that off, it reshapes how a huge market thinks about owning a computer at all.

My take: watch adoption in tier-2 and tier-3 cities, and watch whether Jio bolts on genuine AI features to justify the “AI-ready” label. The pricing is low enough to force the experiment.
