Three USB drives, an old journal, and a laptop password nobody remembers: that’s the inheritance most of us leave behind.
An app called EchoVault wants to replace that pile of static stuff with something that still sounds like you.
The developer behind it, posting on Reddit as u/Emojinapp, built the app after noticing something obvious once you say it out loud. People hand down photos and belongings. They rarely pass down the beliefs they held or how they related to the people they loved.
I’ll be honest, the pitch caught me off guard. Most “digital legacy” tools are just glorified file storage with a nicer folder structure. This one is trying to preserve a perspective, not a hard drive, which is a much harder problem to solve.
What’s new
EchoVault runs you through guided Check-Ins with an AI biographer. You talk, it listens, and it turns your answers into structured memory covering beliefs, relationships, and the moments that changed your mind over the years.
All of that gets stitched into an “Echo,” a version of you that can respond through text, voice, or video. This isn’t a generic chatbot wearing your name. It’s a model trained specifically on what you told it about your own life.
Compare that to something like StoryWorth, which mails you a question a week and binds the answers into a printed book. EchoVault skips the book entirely and builds something you can actually talk to, long after the Check-Ins stop.
The twist
Here’s the part that makes this more than a fancy diary: you get to watch your Echo being built, memory by memory.
EchoVault renders everything as a 3D brain you can rotate and explore. It shows nodes for individual memories, with visible lines connecting them to the beliefs and relationships they shaped. Instead of trusting a black box, you see exactly what the model has learned about you, and why it learned it.
And it’s not just a legacy tool for after you’re gone. The app is built to be used while you’re alive, as a way to examine your own thinking instead of just archiving it. If you go quiet for a full year, the custodians you picked get access to the version of you that you built. That includes text, voice, and video.
Try it yourself
- 🗣️ Run a Check-In. Answer the AI biographer’s prompts about one specific memory, belief, or relationship, not your whole life story at once.
- 🧠 Open the 3D brain. Watch the new memory appear as a node and see which existing beliefs it connects to.
- 🎙️ Talk to your Echo. Text it, call it, or turn on video and see how it answers based on what you’ve given it so far.
- 👥 Pick your custodians. Choose who gets access to your Echo if you go inactive for a year.
What’s missing
The post doesn’t say much about how long an Echo needs to “mature” before it sounds convincingly like you. It also stays quiet on what happens to your data if you stop paying for the app. Those are the questions worth asking before you hand over a year of memories about your relationships to anyone’s server.
It also doesn’t clarify whether custodians can edit the Echo once they inherit it, or just talk to it. For a tool built around preserving one person’s exact perspective, that distinction matters more than most of the marketing copy will tell you upfront. None of this makes the idea less interesting, it just means the fine print deserves a read before the custodian list gets locked in.
Pro tips
Don’t dump your entire life story into one session. The memory graph gets richer from short, repeated Check-Ins spread over weeks, not one three-hour confession.
Correct the Echo early if it gets something wrong about you. The sooner you catch a bad assumption, the less it compounds into later responses.
Pick custodians who actually knew you well enough to notice if the Echo gets something wrong. A custodian who can’t tell a real memory from a hallucinated one defeats the entire point of the brain visualizer.
Worth noting before you commit to any of this: the post is a solo build currently sitting at 3 upvotes and one comment. That makes you an early adopter, not someone joining a proven crowd.
Grab EchoVault on the App Store or at echovault.me, and if you’ve got opinions on the custodian model, drop them in the original thread. 🧭
