Microsoft has announced pricing and specs for its first Nvidia RTX Spark PCs: the Surface Laptop Ultra and the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, a workstation built for developers. According to TechCrunch AI, the company unveiled both machines on Wednesday at an event in San Francisco during the city’s Tech Week. They ship with a revamped version of Windows 11 that’s built to run AI agents.
This launch delivers on a promise Nvidia made back in June. At that point, Nvidia said it had deals with Microsoft and several other PC makers to build “AI- and agent-ready” Windows machines on its RTX Spark chip, but it shared very few details. Now we have prices, configurations and a clear target customer.
🖥️ What Microsoft Announced
- Surface Laptop Ultra, starting at $2,600 The laptop comes in two base models. The standard version starts at $2,600, and the version with a more powerful chip starts at $3,700. Adding memory and storage pushes the price as high as $5,900. Microsoft says that top configuration has already sold out, which tells you there’s real demand for high-end local AI hardware.
- Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, starting at $6,000 This is the workstation option. It comes preloaded with Microsoft’s developer tools: VS Code, GitHub Copilot CLI, WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux) and PowerShell 7. It’s built for people who want to build and test AI agents on their own hardware.
- Hardware designed for local AI Microsoft is selling both devices on running AI models on-device, locally and for free. The CPU, GPU and unified memory are tuned for model workloads, and the machines get better cooling to handle the sustained load. Unified memory lets the CPU and GPU share one memory pool, which matters a lot when you’re loading large models.
- Execution Containers in Windows 11 The software news may outlast the hardware. The updated Windows 11 adds a feature called “Execution Containers,” which Microsoft says makes it easier to sandbox AI agents. Sandboxing keeps an agent inside a contained environment so it can’t freely touch the rest of your system. Satya Nadella said the feature will come to all Windows 11 users, not only people who buy the new Surface hardware.
🧠 Nadella’s Bet on the Agent Layer
Nadella used the event to describe where he thinks the value in AI is moving. “One of the things we realized in the last 3-4 years is that just having a model doesn’t do much for anything,” he said. “You really do need to orchestrate, and you need to have memory outside of the model.”
He described a “harnessed layer” that pulls together multiple models, context, memory and what he called “the action space.” He also said Microsoft is building it “not just for our apps but apps for anyone’s agent. That’s what the Windows platform is all about going forward.”
What stands out to me is how much this reframes Windows. Microsoft wants the operating system to be the place where agents run safely, whoever built them. If Execution Containers work well, that could matter more to most users than any $6,000 workstation.
🍎 A Direct Shot at the MacBook
Microsoft is obviously going after developers. It’s offering up to $1,000 off for anyone who trades in a MacBook Pro. That’s an unusually blunt move, and it shows how firmly Macs have taken hold among developers and AI agent enthusiasts, particularly in Silicon Valley.
Apple’s unified memory architecture has made MacBooks a common pick for running local models. Microsoft and Nvidia are now competing with that same design approach, and they’re adding Nvidia’s GPU ecosystem on top.
Microsoft also says the machines will handle content creation, video processing and gaming. So they aren’t only for developers, even though the pitch clearly leans that way.
⚠️ Caveats Worth Noting
- Price: Even the cheapest Surface Laptop Ultra costs $2,600. That puts it well outside the mainstream market.
- Stock: The top laptop configuration has already sold out.
- Timing: Microsoft hasn’t said exactly when Execution Containers will reach everyday Windows 11 users.
🔭 More RTX Spark Machines Coming
Microsoft wasn’t the only company with news. Dell shared details on its previously announced XPS 16 Creator Edition, which is now available for preorder at Best Buy for $3,800, with delivery later in October. Expect more RTX Spark devices from Nvidia’s other partners soon.
The bigger question is whether developers will actually leave their Macs. A trade-in discount helps, but software decides what platform developers stay on. If Windows can become the most trusted place to run AI agents, Microsoft has a real chance. TechCrunch AI has the full details on pricing and specs.
