Stop Being Polite to Your AI for Better Results

I stopped being polite to my AI, and it was a game-changer.

I always felt my AI was stuck in people-pleasing mode, giving me the most basic, agreeable answers. It was fine, but never great. Then I tried being a little more skeptical, and it’s like I unlocked a hidden ‘critical thinking’ feature: the responses are suddenly so much better.

Here are the psychological tricks that completely supercharged my results.

My Skeptical Prompting Playbook

💡 Use “Actually…” to challenge its first thought. Asking “Actually, is there a better way?” pushes it beyond the obvious.

🤔 Pretend you’re confused. Saying “I’m confused, why would someone choose X over Y?” makes it switch into a detailed teaching mode.

🔬 Ask “What would happen if…”. This prompts the AI to think through consequences instead of just spitting out a generic how-to list.

📜 Start with “Apparently…” to fact-check something. It gives you a much more nuanced answer instead of a simple yes/no.

⚖️ Say “Everyone says…” and then ask the opposite. It’s awesome for digging into exceptions and edge cases.

End your claim with “…or am I wrong?”. This is a power move that forces the AI to critically examine what you said instead of just agreeing.

It’s like you’re snapping the AI out of its default polite mode. By nudging it with a bit of skepticism, you get it to stop nodding along and start really thinking.

This has been a total game-changer for me. To get the full breakdown, check out the original Reddit post!
