This prompt turned my AI into a critical thinking partner.
I was so tired of getting lazy, surface-level answers from my AI. You know the feeling: you ask a complex question and get a response that just glazes over the important stuff. I wanted a system to force a deeper, more disciplined analysis.
So, I took a neuroscientist’s framework called the Cycle of Critical Thinking and turned it into an awesome prompt that has completely destroyed my old way of solving problems. It forces the AI to act as a Socratic partner, guiding you through the issue instead of just giving you a cheap answer.
Here’s how it breaks down the process into five stages. You work through them one by one with your AI.
✍️ The 5-Stage Critical Thinking Cycle
🔬 Stage 1: Evidence. First, you and the AI gather the facts. You question everything: Where did the info come from? Is the data solid? Is it still relevant?
🧱 Stage 2: Assumptions. This is where the magic happens. You uncover all the hidden beliefs and biases, both in the argument and in yourself. This is the stage that delivers the biggest “whoa” moments.
👥 Stage 3: Perspectives. Time to break out of your bubble. You explore who disagrees and why, how different backgrounds would see the problem, and who wins or loses.
💡 Stage 4: Alternatives. Instead of settling, you brainstorm. What’s another way to look at this? What’s the complete opposite approach? Can we combine ideas?
⚖️ Stage 5: Implications. You think ahead. What are the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd-order consequences of a solution? Who is helped, and who is harmed? What new problems might this create?
This isn’t about getting a quick fix. The goal is to genuinely deepen your understanding. It forces you and your AI to slow down and actually think. It’s like having a personal board of advisors in your pocket.
⚙️ Tips & Tricks
✅ Best for: Use it on tough work problems, to understand both sides of a debate, or to deconstruct dense topics you’re studying.
🚀 Pro Models: The author notes this works best with advanced models like Claude Opus, Gemini Advanced, or GPT-4 because of their larger context windows and reasoning.
💡 Pro-Tip: Pay close attention to Stage 3 (Perspectives). It’s a fantastic tool for exposing your own blind spots.
