Anthropic Hands Startups a Free Year of Claude Team

Anthropic wants to be the default AI stack for early-stage founders, and it’s paying to get there. On Tuesday, the company announced an expanded Claude for Startups program, according to TechCrunch AI. Qualifying companies get a free year of Claude Team, $1,000 in API credits and direct access to Anthropic’s own engineers.

The new version launched at Anthropic’s SF Tech Week event. It goes after a group that matters a lot right now: small teams deciding which model provider to build on.

What Startups Actually Get

TechCrunch AI reports that the expanded program includes four main benefits:

  1. A free year of Claude Team. That’s Anthropic’s paid plan for groups, and the offer covers up to five premium seats. For a small founding team, a year of paid AI seats is a real line item that just disappears from the budget.
  2. $1,000 in API credits. The seats are for using Claude. The credits are for building with it. That money goes toward prototyping features, testing agents or running early production traffic on Anthropic’s models.
  3. Access to Claude Marketplace. Companies in the program can build plug-ins for Claude. That gives startups a possible distribution channel inside Anthropic’s own ecosystem, not just a model to call from their own app.
  4. Virtual office hours with the Applied AI team. Founders can book time with Anthropic’s Applied AI staff. For a team stuck on prompt design, evals or agent setup, a direct line to the people who know the model best could be worth more than the credits.

Who Qualifies

The bar is fairly low. Companies are eligible if they were founded in the last five years or raised funding in the last two years. You only need to meet one of those conditions.

That’s a wide net. A seed-stage startup qualifies easily, and so does a four-year-old company that just closed a new round. Interested companies can apply through the Claude for Startups program page.

Why Anthropic Is Doing This

Anthropic explained its reasoning in the announcement. “We created this program because we believe the benefits of AI will reach most people through the companies that build on top of models, rather than through the models alone,” the company said. “That makes partnering closely with founders and developers central to our mission.”

That’s the mission framing. The business logic is just as clear. Switching model providers isn’t free once a startup has written prompts, built evals and shipped features around one model’s quirks. Win a company at the seed stage and there’s a good chance you keep it as it grows into a much bigger API customer.

This isn’t a new playbook. Cloud providers have spent years handing out startup credits for exactly this reason. AI labs now run the same play, and the fight for developer loyalty keeps heating up.

How It Stacks Up

What stands out here is the mix. Plenty of startup programs offer only credits. Anthropic bundles three things:

  • Productivity seats for the team’s daily work
  • API credits for building the product
  • Human support from its Applied AI team

To be fair, $1,000 in API credits isn’t huge. A startup running heavy agent workloads could burn through that fast. The seats and office hours carry more of the value, especially for teams that are still figuring out how to use AI across the whole company, not just inside the product.

The Marketplace angle is the one to watch. If Claude’s plug-in ecosystem takes off, startups that build early could get exposure that’s hard to buy later.

What Founders Should Do Now

If you run a young or recently funded company, here’s what’s worth doing:

  • Check eligibility. Founded in the last five years or funded in the last two? You’re probably in.
  • Use the office hours on purpose. Show up with a specific problem, like eval design or cost tuning, instead of general questions.
  • Don’t lock in blindly. Free access is a great reason to test Claude seriously. Keep your architecture flexible enough to compare models anyway.
  • Look at the Marketplace. If your product fits as a Claude plug-in, getting in early could help with distribution.

What Comes Next

Expect rival labs to answer with richer startup packages of their own. As models get closer in quality, the race shifts toward ecosystems, support and the friction of switching. Anthropic is betting that founders who start on Claude will stay on Claude. Full program details are available in TechCrunch AI’s original report.
