SITUATION REPORT: OpenAI has moved its ad business into 26 more markets.
OpenAI announced on October 21 that ChatGPT Ads is now available in 26 more countries. Ads now run in 89 markets in total. The company also says more than 100,000 advertisers have used the platform. OpenAI describes the pitch this way: brands from “local businesses to global brands” can now reach people “as they explore, compare and decide what to buy in ChatGPT.”
This is a scale-up, not a test.
🎯 What Changed
Based on OpenAI’s announcement and early coverage, here’s what’s confirmed:
- 26 new countries. Fourteen are in Latin America, including Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Peru. The rest are spread across Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia, with markets like Nigeria, South Africa, Serbia, Ukraine, Cambodia, Bangladesh and Pakistan.
- 89 markets in total. ChatGPT Ads is now a global ad product.
- 100,000+ advertisers. That’s OpenAI’s own count of everyone who has ever run a campaign.
- Two ways to buy. Advertisers in the new markets can go through technology partners or set up campaigns themselves in Ads Manager.
- Only free tiers see ads. Ads show up on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro and Enterprise stay ad-free.
📊 Read the Numbers Carefully
The 100,000 figure sounds big. It’s also a cumulative number. It counts everyone who has ever launched a campaign, not how many advertisers are active today or what they spend. Several outlets have flagged this already.
The revenue numbers matter more. OpenAI reported in August that its ad business had reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate. That’s a lot of money for a product that didn’t exist a short time ago, and it explains why OpenAI is expanding this fast.
⚡ Why This Matters
For years, people asked how OpenAI would pay for its huge compute bills. Subscriptions were the answer for paying users. But most ChatGPT users pay nothing, and serving them costs real money. Ads are how OpenAI makes money from that free audience.
What stands out is where these ads appear. Search ads catch people while they’re typing a query. ChatGPT ads catch people while they’re thinking out loud: comparing options, asking follow-ups and narrowing down a purchase. That’s arguably the most valuable spot in the whole buying process. It’s also the spot Google has owned for twenty years.
The country list tells you something too. Many of these markets are mobile-first, growing fast and pricier for advertisers to reach through the big incumbent platforms. OpenAI wants to get in early, while ad inventory is cheap and competition is thin.
🛡️ Watch Points
There’s risk here, and some of it lands on users:
- Trust. An assistant that recommends products and also sells ad space has a built-in conflict. OpenAI will need clear labeling and a strict line between answers and sponsored placements.
- Privacy rules. Expanding into this many regulatory regimes at once means a lot of compliance work, especially around personal data and targeting.
- A push to upgrade. Ads on free tiers give users one more reason to pay for Plus. Expect OpenAI to lean on that.
🧭 Recommended Actions
Marketers and founders:
- If you sell into any of the new markets, test early. New ad channels usually have their lowest costs and weakest competition at launch.
- Write for conversational intent. People in ChatGPT are asking detailed questions, not typing two-word keywords.
- Track quality, not just cost per click. A cheap click from a casual browser isn’t the same as a lead from someone who just finished comparing three vendors.
Product teams and publishers:
- Treat ChatGPT as a discovery channel, much like search. If your brand isn’t showing up there, organic or paid, a competitor’s will.
🔭 Outlook
This isn’t a pilot anymore. OpenAI is building a global ad network on top of the world’s most-used AI assistant, and the jump from a few markets to 89 shows how seriously it’s taking this. Expect more ad formats, better measurement tools and more countries in the coming months. Google, Meta and Microsoft will be watching closely, because this budget comes straight out of theirs.
Full details on the expansion are in OpenAI’s announcement.
