Anthropic launched two new tools for Claude today: Docs and Slides. Both are in beta and let you build documents and presentations straight from a Claude chat, then export, edit, and share them with other people. According to The Verge AI, the release also comes with a bigger structural change: Anthropic is folding regular chats and Cowork into what it calls “one Claude,” so every productivity feature is reachable from any conversation.
This is a direct shot at Google. Gemini has long had one advantage Claude couldn’t match: it lives inside Docs, Sheets, and Slides. Now Anthropic is building its own versions of those surfaces rather than waiting for an invite into someone else’s.
What’s in the box
As detailed in The Verge AI, here’s what the update includes:
- Claude Docs: Generate a document from any chat. Ask Claude to revise it, or edit it by hand.
- Claude Slides: Same idea, but for presentations. Prompt, generate, tweak, export.
- Sharing and collaboration: Docs start private, like Google Docs. You can invite other editors, and they can work on the file at the same time you do.
- Comments: Collaborators, and Claude itself, can leave comments that look like the ones you’d see in a Google Doc.
- One link for everything: Anthropic says “Anything you make with Claude Design, Slides, or Docs lives at one shareable link you can open on your phone.”
- One Claude: Chat, Cowork, Artifacts, and Claude Design all merge into a single interface. Claude “can now figure out what a task needs,” per Anthropic, and pulls in the right capability with “the context, skills, and connectors you already have.”
How it stacks up against Gemini
The Verge AI frames this as a gap-closing move. Anthropic’s models are generally viewed as more capable than Google’s, but Google has the distribution. Earlier this year, Google pushed Gemini deeper into Workspace: a Gemini chat window inside Docs, full-document generation and editing, and slide creation from prompts.
Claude Docs and Slides don’t replicate all of that. What they do is remove a reason to leave. If you’re already working in a Claude chat and need a memo or a deck, you no longer have to jump to Google or Microsoft to finish the job.
What stands out here is the collaboration layer. Real-time co-editing and comment threads aren’t features you’d expect from a chatbot vendor’s first attempt at documents. They signal Anthropic wants these files to be places where teams actually work, not just export targets.
Who gets it and when
- Rolling out first to Pro and Max subscribers on web, desktop, and mobile “over the next few weeks”
- Team and Free users get access later, with no date given
- There’s “nothing to turn on,” according to Anthropic. The update arrives on its own.
- You can keep using Claude chat exactly as before if you don’t want the new tools
Caveats
Both Docs and Slides are labeled beta, so expect rough edges. The Verge AI doesn’t detail export formats, offline access, or how these files interact with existing Google or Microsoft documents. And the rollout is staggered, so most users won’t see it on day one.
Why this matters
AI assistants are turning into workspaces. OpenAI, Google, and now Anthropic are all trying to keep you inside one window for the whole task, from first question to finished deliverable. Whoever wins that fight owns the daily workflow, and the subscription that comes with it.
For Claude users, the practical upshot is simple: fewer tabs. For Google, it’s a warning that model quality plus a decent document editor might be enough to pull some knowledge workers out of Workspace.
