Gemini Finally Rides Shotgun in Apple CarPlay

Google is bringing its conversational Gemini assistant to Apple CarPlay, nearly a year after it first launched on Android Auto. The Verge AI reports that Gemini in Google Maps navigation is available today for US drivers, and Google says a global rollout is also underway. The Verge has asked Google which regions are included, and Google hasn’t shared those details yet.

For iPhone owners who use Google Maps in the car, this is a real upgrade. You’re no longer limited to rigid voice commands. You can now hold a back-and-forth conversation with the assistant while you drive.

What CarPlay Drivers Get

Here’s what the update brings, based on The Verge AI’s report:

  1. Hands-free conversation in Google Maps. You talk to Gemini directly inside Google Maps on the car’s infotainment screen. It’s built to keep your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road.
  2. Multi-step requests. This is the main improvement. You can ask Gemini for recommendations on places to visit, then tell it to take you there while avoiding toll roads. The assistant keeps track of the conversation, so you don’t have to restart with a new command each time.
  3. Traffic reporting by voice. Google describes the update as a conversational way to report traffic disruptions. You just say what you see on the road instead of tapping through menus.
  4. Information about stops and places. You can ask about places along your route while you’re driving, which is handy on road trips or in unfamiliar cities.
  5. One-tap activation. To start, tap the Gemini icon in Google Maps on your car’s display. You don’t need any extra setup.

What’s Missing

The biggest caveat is about personalization. One day before the CarPlay news, Google announced Personal Intelligence features for Gemini in Android Auto and in cars with Google built-in. Those features let the assistant pull information from your Google apps, including Gmail, Calendar, Maps, Photos, YouTube and Search.

Google said nothing about those features coming to CarPlay. The Verge AI has asked Google whether CarPlay users will get the personalization update too. For now, iPhone drivers get the conversational navigation without the deeper connection to their personal data.

That gap matters. An assistant that can see your calendar and email can do much more for you. It could notice your next meeting and plan the route, or find a restaurant address someone sent you. Without that context, CarPlay users get a smarter navigator but not a real personal assistant.

Why It Matters

This launch shows Google pushing Gemini onto every screen it can reach, including screens controlled by Apple. Google Maps is already one of the most popular apps people run on CarPlay. Putting Gemini inside it lets Google meet iPhone users in their cars without needing them to switch phones.

The car is also a natural fit for conversational AI. Drivers can’t safely type or scroll. Voice is the obvious interface, and older voice assistants struggled with anything more complex than “navigate home.” Large language models handle follow-up questions and chained requests much better. That’s exactly the type of multi-step task Google is showing off here.

The nearly 12-month gap between Android Auto and CarPlay is worth noting. Google tends to give its own platform the first look and the best features. The missing Personal Intelligence features suggest Android Auto will keep that edge, at least for now.

There’s also competition in the background. Apple has its own assistant and its own mapping app inside CarPlay. Every iPhone driver who gets used to asking Gemini for directions is a driver who isn’t relying on Apple’s tools.

What Comes Next

The key questions are when international users get access and whether Personal Intelligence comes to CarPlay. If Google brings full personalization to iPhone drivers, Gemini becomes a far stronger assistant for the road. If it doesn’t, Android Auto stays the better place to use Gemini in the car.

The Verge AI says it will update its report once Google responds about regional availability and personalization support.
