Kboard just surfaced on r/PromptEngineering, and it is a small build with a clever angle. It is an open source Android keyboard on F-Droid that works as a prompt launcher. The author calls it abandoned, so read on with that in mind. The twist: the launcher is the keyboard itself, so your saved prompts show up in any app where you can type, with no copy-paste dance between apps.
A caveat up front. The post is only a title, a one-line description, an F-Droid link and a screenshot. There are no comments yet and I have not tested the app. Treat what follows as a way to try the idea, not a review. Details like how prompts are stored, whether you can import a list, or how many fit on screen are things I could not confirm, so check the repo and the F-Droid page before you build a whole workflow around it.
What’s new: most prompt managers live in a separate app or a notes file. You switch over, copy, switch back, paste. On a phone that is at least four taps and a context switch, and the switch is where you lose your train of thought. A keyboard skips all of that because it is already open wherever you are typing, whether that is ChatGPT, Claude, a browser, an email draft or a messaging app. Think of the moments when you are on the bus, replying to a client, and you want your “make this politer and shorter” prompt right now. That is the use case this fits.
The twist: the Android input method layer is the best place for a prompt library. It works in every app with a text field and needs no integration with any AI product. So when a new chatbot app shows up next month, your prompts already work in it on day one. No plugin, no API key, no sync service. Your library follows you because the keyboard follows you.
Try it in four steps:
- 📲 Install Kboard from F-Droid (package com.adgad.kboard). Since it is no longer maintained, check the repo first, look at when the last commit landed, and install only if you are comfortable with that.
- ⌨️ Enable it in Android’s keyboard settings, then switch to it from the keyboard picker when you want it. The picker icon shows up in the navigation bar whenever a text field is open, so switching takes about one tap.
- 🧩 Load your go-to prompts: a summarize template, a rewrite-in-my-voice starter, a debugging checklist. Start with three to five. A small, sharp set beats a long list you have to scroll through.
- 🚀 Open any AI chat, tap the prompt, fill in the blanks and send.
Here is what a good starter set looks like. A summarize prompt such as “Summarize this in five bullets for a busy reader: [paste text here]”. A rewrite prompt such as “Rewrite this in a friendly, direct tone, keep it under 80 words: [paste text here]”. A debugging prompt such as “Here is the error and the code. Explain the cause first, then give the smallest fix: [paste error and code here]”. Each one is short enough to read at a glance and specific enough to get a useful answer on the first try.
Pro tips
- Keep each prompt short and put placeholders in brackets, like [paste text here], so you know exactly what to replace. Put the placeholder at the end of the prompt so your cursor lands right where you need to paste.
- Because the project is abandoned, do not rely on it for sensitive typing like passwords or banking. Keep your normal keyboard for that and switch to Kboard only for prompts. A good habit is to treat it as a launcher you open on purpose, not your daily driver.
- Name or order your prompts by how often you use them, so the top three are the ones you reach for most.
- If it does not fit your setup, the idea is still worth copying. Any keyboard with a snippets or text-expansion feature can do a similar job. Gboard’s personal dictionary shortcuts, for example, let you type a short trigger like “sumx” and expand it into a full prompt.
The screenshot in the post suggests a very simple interface, which is often a good sign for a tool you want to open in two seconds.
