Opus Tuner Is a Free Claude Skill That Trims Your Token Burn

Fresh drop on r/PromptEngineering: Opus Tuner, an open-source Claude skill from u/SykoDak1ng. They built it because Opus 5.5 on high was eating their Pro quota way too fast.

What’s new

It’s a lightweight skill that sits on top of your prompts and sets behavior constraints for Opus. It cuts the preamble and conversational fluff, and it makes sure the model knows what format and depth you want on the first try. Fewer wasted words per turn means less quota burned.

The twist

The part I like is that it doesn’t only shorten answers. It also bounds the reasoning depth to match how hard the task actually is. A small question shouldn’t get the same heavy thinking as a gnarly refactor, and that’s where a lot of tokens quietly disappear.

There’s a catch, and the author says so up front. The default constraints are tuned hard for coding and technical work. One commenter threw a story outline at it and got back something that read like an IKEA manual. Funny, and also useful to know before you try it on creative writing.

The configs are fully exposed, so you can fork it and loosen things up for your own use.

Mini-workflow

  1. 📦 Grab the repo: github.com/YahyaLendani/opus-tuner-claude-skill
  2. 🔌 Drop the skill into your Claude setup.
  3. 🧪 Run a normal coding or technical task and watch how much shorter and tighter the replies get.
  4. 📊 Compare your quota burn against a typical day without it.
  5. 🛠️ Fork it and adjust the parameters for your own workflow.

Pro tips

  • Keep two versions of the config: a strict one for code and a looser one for writing, brainstorming, and anything open-ended. Switch based on the job instead of fighting one setting.
  • Test it on a task you’ve already run. You’ll see the difference faster than with a brand new prompt.
  • If output feels cut off, that’s the constraints doing their job. Raise the limits before you decide the skill is broken.

Worth your time?

If you’re on Pro and live in code, probably yes, since it’s free and you can read every setting. If you mostly write stories or long essays, expect to do some tuning first. The author is also open to pull requests and feedback, which is a nice bonus for a v1.

Call to action: try it on one real task today, then tell me how it went for your quota ⚓
