Opportunity assessment: high. The way people reach software is changing. A small startup just raised money on the idea that the app store is no longer the front door.
Photon, which helps developers build AI agents that run inside iMessage and WhatsApp, has closed a $4.5 million seed round, TechCrunch AI reports. Gradient and A* co-led the round. Vercel, HongShan, Z Fellows, Llama Ventures, Karman and several angel investors also joined. The raise follows a stretch where, by the company’s own numbers, Photon signed up more than 40,000 developers and grew revenue 10x in four months.
They also held a funeral. On September 17 in San Francisco, Photon hosted an “app funeral” in a real church, with speeches and a coffin full of app icons. It doubled as a developer day, with panels from Vercel, Stripe and OpenAI.
🎯 The Thesis
The funeral was a joke with a serious point behind it. Photon is betting that people are tired of installing new apps. They’d rather use agents that live inside the messaging apps they already open every day.
Co-founder and CEO Daniel Tian didn’t claim it will happen overnight. “Honestly, it’s going to take a while, but I think, directionally, it’s inevitable,” he told TechCrunch AI.
The idea came from a problem the founders kept running into. Tian and CTO Ryan Zhu built consumer apps at student hackathons, and every launch hit the same wall: nobody found the apps. So they built an agent that worked inside Apple’s Messages. Tian’s first version texted his friends back as him. They open-sourced it, thousands of developers picked it up, and Tian left UPenn’s M&T program while Zhu left high school.
📋 Key Intel
- The product. A unified API, an extensible channel framework, a CLI and an observability suite. Developers build one agent and ship it across iMessage, WhatsApp, Telegram, SMS/RCS, email, voice and more.
- Open source still dominates. 98% of Photon usage runs on the free open source version.
- The paid layer is new. Photon launched its managed platform in April. It promises 99.95% uptime and is SOC 2 Type II and HIPAA compliant, which matters for healthcare agents.
- The pricing trigger. Anything over 10 users moves you off the free tier and onto one of three paid tiers.
- Retention signals. The company reports churn under 3% and says messaging volume grew 5x in the last month. It isn’t sharing actual revenue figures.
- Who’s using it. Corgi Insurance, Boardy, Ditto, Rho, Fliptexts and Slashy, mostly in fintech and consumer AI.
- Infrastructure reach. Photon is the default iMessage layer for Nous Research’s Hermes agent. It also sits under Tencent’s QClaw and NanoClaw, and it integrates with Vercel, LangChain, Mastra, Convex, Render, Railway and Telnyx.
⚠️ Why It Matters
What stands out here is the distribution angle. For years, the hardest part of building a consumer product wasn’t the code. It was getting people to download it. Messaging-based agents skip that step completely. Your user already has the app open.
The big platforms are clearly chasing the same idea. TechCrunch AI notes that Meta’s Muse has hit No. 1 on the app stores. Tian’s bet is that even if Muse wins the consumer side, developers will still need neutral plumbing to put their own agents into messaging channels. That’s the gap Photon wants to own.
There’s a risk worth tracking. Photon’s iMessage access depends on Apple, and Apple has shut down unofficial iMessage bridges before. A platform built on someone else’s messaging app is only as stable as that company’s patience.
🔭 Next Move: Agent-to-Agent
Tian is already looking past human-to-agent chat. He sees Photon becoming a communication layer between agents.
“I think, in the future, agents will be able to find you the agent that can do the right things, so it’s going to be the A-to-A communication layer,” he said.
Picture planning a trip with your AI assistant. Partway through, it pulls in a flight-booking agent and then a hotel agent, all inside the same thread. Tian calls this the “A-to-A-to-P” space: agent to agent to person.
🧭 Action Items for Builders
- If you’re about to ship a consumer app, test whether a messaging agent gets you to users faster.
- If you’re in a regulated vertical, the HIPAA and SOC 2 coverage makes healthcare and finance pilots realistic.
- Plan for platform risk. Build for several channels so you’re not depending on just one.
The app era isn’t over yet. But the people building the next interface are already writing its obituary. Full details are available in the original TechCrunch AI report.
